Obsidian is a silica-rich, glassy, volcanic rock with a water content of less than one percent. It is an amorphous stone, meaning that its structure contains no regular geometric pattern. Since it breaks with very sharp conchoidal fractures it has been used to make tools and arrowheads, spear points, scrapers and many other cutting instruments since Paleolithic times.
